Las Vegas Hidden Treasures

September 26, 2021 by lvd0zias

Each trip to Vegas usually includes discovering something you did not know about. Maybe it is a store you are seeing for the first time, an art display, a special view, or a show you did not know was playing. In the Entertainment Capital of the World you almost always come across some Las Vegas Hidden Treasures.

With so many incredible sites to see and activities to do in Las Vegas, it can be easy to miss or overlook some of them, even when they are right in front of you! Let’s have a look at some of our favorite Las Vegas hidden treasures.

1. THE Steak House

Location: Circus Circus Hotel, 2880 S Las Vegas Blvd

A Las Vegas dining tradition for over 30 years, THE Steak House at Circus Circus is acclaimed for serving the finest quality Midwestern beef, dry-aged to perfection in a glass-enclosed room viewable from the main dining room. Prime cuts are prepared over an exhibition-style, open-hearth mesquite charcoal broiler.

If you are familiar with THE Steak House, referring to it as a hidden treasure will seem strange. But that is just it. THE Steak House is so obvious it is easily missed. Entering Circus Circus from the Las Vegas Strip, curve around the Main Casino then continue straight, passing Krispy Kreme. THE Steak House will be on your left. No fancy eye catching exterior. No grand view of inside the restaurant or exterior seating area.

The Steakhouse at Circus Circus

THE Steak House is known for great food. With an average rating of 4.5\5 on Tripadvisor, the reviews say it all. A simple one-page menu with appetizers, salads, entries and accompaniments to choose from. Entries come with soup or salad and the portions won’t leave you hungry. You won’t find hamburgers, chicken fingers or pasta type items on this menu, they stick to seafood and steak. And do it well. They claim to have the best cheese cake ever (even at times offering to not charge you for the cake if you disagree!). Not surprisingly they are right, the cheese cake is incredible.

The atmosphere is unique. The lighting and décor seemingly transport you back to the 70’s, but not in a bad way. Everything is neat and clean. It feels like old school Vegas, almost as though it could be a scene from the movie Casino.

2. Le Macaron

Location: in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian hotel, 3355 S Las Vegas Blvd

Le Macaron is a franchise with locations all across the United States. They are known for the macaron which is considered to be the jewel of French pastries in Europe. And they don’t disappoint. The macarons delight, with the first bite being a surprise for those who have never tried one. The second bit you will notice the flavor. And by the third bite, it is nothing but pleasure. In total, a mouthful of heaven!

3. Hard Hat Lounge

Location: 1675 Industrial Rd, Las Vegas

Perhaps best known for the mural on the wall allegedly painted by Frank Bowers in 1962 to pay off a bar tab, the Hard Hat Lounge is referred to as a dive bar. Dive Bars are typically a small, unglamorous, eclectic, old-style bar with inexpensive drinks and may feature dim lighting, shabby or dated decor, neon beer signs, packaged beer sales, cash-only service, and a local clientele. Which perhaps describes this place perfectly.

Las Vegas Hidden Treasures - Hard Hat Lounge

Built in 1958, and a full bar since 1962, the 24-hour location with an outdoor patio is best known for catering to local workers, and being in an industrial area, that is to be expected. This place has a real authentic feeling. The vibe is chill and the staff is super nice.

If you are looking for an authentic Vegas dive bar experience, the Hard Hat Lounge fits the bill. Their vegan pizza is popular – we had pepperoni pizza and it was delicious!

4. Frankie’s Tiki Room

Location: 1712 West Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas

Frankie’s Tiki Room is a unique combination of south seas exotica and modern primitivism, with just a hint of Las Vegas kitsch. A place where you can escape to the fantasy 24/7.

The interior of Frankie’s was built by Bamboo Ben, the world’s foremost tiki bar designer and grandson of Eli Hedley, famous for creating the décor at such fabulous destinations as the original Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland and the Las Vegas classic Aku Aku at the Stardust. Frankie’s also boasts original artwork and carvings by such renown artists as Shag, Bosko Hrnjak, Crazy Al Evans, Tom “Big Toe” Laura, Doug Horne and the revered godfather of all tiki carvers Leroy Schmaltz.

Las Vegas Hidden Treasures - Frankies Tiki Room Las Vegas

Get boozed-up amid a remarkable combination of traditional island decor and modern lowbrow art while listening to a soundtrack that bounces from exotica and surf to psychobilly and garage. Frankie’s is a one-of-a kind experience that will absolutely blow your mind.

The atmosphere is dark (no windows) and smoky, in a good way. Hawaiian music, and drinks add to the cool, mellow vibes! You will forget you are in Vegas! As a tourist, Frankie’s Tiki Room is off the beaten path, but this is one Las Vegas hidden treasure worth discovering.

MGM Grand Las Vegas Stay Well Rooms

August 26, 2021 by lvd0zias

When MGM Grand Las Vegas last renovated, they introduced “Stay Well” rooms that are designed to “… help guests reverse jetlag; reset the body’s internal 24-hour clock and regulate melatonin levels to promote better sleep; incorporate an advanced water filtration system which infuses Vitamin C into shower water; and offer healthy food and beverage options” according to a statement release by MGM Grand. Perhaps most surprisingly is these rooms are offered at a reasonable price and are included in promotional deals.

Located in the hotel’s main tower, the MGM Grand Las Vegas Stay Well Rooms are 42 rooms offering 12 health and wellness features including:

  • Advanced Room Lighting which improves the body’s internal clock by assisting in the regulation of melatonin production and sleep/wake cycles
  • Wake Up Light Therapy exposing guests to short periods of blue-shaded lighting to increase energy and reverse the effects of jetlag
  • LED lamps designed to illuminate pathways at night without disturbing melatonin levels
  • Dawn Simulator Alarm Clocks gradually awakening the body
  • Vitamin C Shower Infusion providing shower water infused with Vitamin C which neutralizes chlorine to promote healthy hair and skin
  • STAY WELL Air Purification System which is the most advanced HEPA-standard air purification system reduces allergens, toxins and pathogens, creating better air quality and breathing
  • Aromatherapy – optional aroma infusion for STAY WELL guests.
  • Water Filtration System to reduce disinfectant byproducts, chlorine, pesticides and some pharmaceutical and personal care products for the cleanest, most purified in-room water
  • EMF Protection protecting STAY WELL guests from electrical equipment that emanates sleep-disruptive Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)
  • Photo-Catalytic Coating to break down bacteria, virus and VOCs on bacteria-susceptible surfaces
  • Cleveland Clinic exclusive access wellness software which includes stress management, sleep and nutrition programs, as well as access to healthy food/drink options developed by the Cleveland Clinic, which guests can use for up to 60 days after their stay
  • STAY WELL Channel providing an educational video on the features in the room

Scott Sibella, president and COO of MGM Grand believes health and wellness is something guests do not want to leave behind when on vacation “We know our guests come to Las Vegas to escape and unwind, but we also know that an increasing number of them are looking to take their wellness lifestyle ‘on the road’ as an extension of their daily, healthful lives at home, The MGM Grand Las Vegas Stay Well Rooms rooms provide an unprecedented opportunity for a complete wellness hotel experience.”

Those already into healthy lifestyles are likely to view this as a necessity and some corporations may even foot the bill for the upgrade for their employees viewing it as a sound investment in health and wellness.

Somewhat surprisingly, the rooms are only an additional $30 more than MGM Grand’s regular priced rooms. A great deal for a relaxing experience in Las Vegas.

Book your stay at MGM Grand and enjoy a Stay Well Room.

How to Experience the Las Vegas Strip to the Fullest on a Tight Budget

August 26, 2021 by lvd0zias

The Las Vegas Strip provides glitz and glamour. It also has an “expensive” connotation. Therefore, many travelers avoid the Strip because they are concerned they may not be able to afford the trip. Fortunately, experiencing the Las Vegas Strip to the fullest on a tight budget is not only possible, it’s actually quite simple. We’ll show you how to How to Experience the Las Vegas Strip to the Fullest on a Tight Budget …

Every Visitor Must Experience the Bellagio Fountains Show
Las Vegas is known for its amazing shows. One of the best shows in town – the Bellagio Fountains show – is free. In front of the world famous Bellagio Hotel and Casino rests a row of gorgeous fountains. From 3 p.m. until midnight (Mon-Fri) and 12 p.m. until midnight (weekends) – once every half hour – dance in unison to the sounds of Frank Sinatra or other legendary musicians.

To ensure you have a good view of the fountain show, make sure you arrive at least 5-10 minutes early. There are usually places to stand with a great view either across the street in front of Paris Hotel & Casino or directly in front of the Bellagio fountains as long as you arrive a bit early.

Play a Role in Determining the Fate of a Potential CBS Television Show
Tired of all those mediocre television shows that come and go? Here is your chance to help determine the fate of potential CBS television shows at MGM Grand. Upon entering the MGM Grand hotel you will notice employees passing out tickets to the CBS Research Center. These tickets are good for free admission to a taping of a pilot episode of a potential CBS television series.

You won’t be able to choose the type of show you get to watch, but the experience is entertaining regardless. During the show, you will rate how interested you are in the show. Your opinions will be used to determine if the show will ever make it to television. This is a cool experience and will only take about an hour out of your day. After you’re done rating the show, you will receive some free coupons. Sometimes patrons receive cash as well ($20-$50 usually).

Nothing Beats Sightseeing in Las Vegas
You’ve seen pictures of the bright lights and fancy hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Now it’s time to experience it firsthand. Sightseeing is something every Las Vegas visitor must do. There are few places in the world with better sightseeing opportunities than the Las Vegas Strip.

You will have a few different sightseeing options. You can walk the Strip, which is about 4 miles in length (preferred). The monorail costs $5 per way and that isn’t a bad idea if you want to avoid driving through Las Vegas Boulevard or walking. The other options are to ride the Deuce or Strip Express bus ($8 for 24 hours) or drive. Whichever sightseeing option you choose, make sure you don’t miss stopping by any of the following spots (and don’t forget your camera!):

• Conservatory & Botanical Gardens and Chocolate Fountain inside Bellagio
• Eiffel Tower outside Paris Hotel and Casino
• Forum Shoppes at Caesars Palace
• M&M World next to MGM Grand
• Hershey’s Chocolate World at New York New York
• CityCenter
• The Linq (shopping and dining center next to Flamingo and The LINQ hotel)

Start at Mandalay Bay (south end of the Strip) and work your way to the Stratosphere (north end of the Strip, and also one of the world’s highest points). You can spend hours of fun simply by walking or driving down the Strip, viewing all the fancy hotels and sights. At night, the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip provide some amazing scenery.

Eating Cheap Scrumptious Meals Near the Strip
Although many restaurants on or near the Las Vegas Strip are expensive, there are some hidden gems. Whether you’re in the mood for a pizza, sandwich or a steak, Las Vegas has an affordable tasty restaurant to satisfy your appetite. The first hidden gem is located directly behind the Strip – Ellis Island Casino.

Ellis Island is a block east of the Horseshoe, or a 5-minute walk from the Strip. At Ellis Island, you can indulge in the best $8.99 complete steak dinner you’ll ever have. The meal includes a tasty 8-ounce steak, vegetables, a choice of potato, a side salad and a beer or root beer. It’s tough to eat better for less than $10.

Not in the mood for a steak? There are many other inexpensive options. Grab a delicious footlong hot dog inside Casino Royale for just $1.99. If that doesn’t strike your fancy either, certainly one of these options will:

  • A burger at Johnny Rockets. There are nearly a dozen on the Strip. You will find a coupon on Groupon for $6, which is good for $12 worth of food.
  • A slice of pizza, side salad and soda at Pop’s Pizza. Located directly across Las Vegas Boulevard from Mandalay Bay. Less than $10 for this combo. Pizza there is very good.
  • There are food courts in most of the hotels on the Strip with inexpensive popular restaurants such as McDonald’s, Subway, etc.

Enjoying your trip to Las Vegas doesn’t have to be expensive. We hope us showing you How to Experience the Las Vegas Strip to the Fullest on a Tight Budget has provided many great activities and places to eat on the Las Vegas Strip that are inexpensive. Enjoy your vacation!

Best and Worst Las Vegas Strip Hotel Names

August 26, 2021 by lvd0zias

The other day we found ourselves in a discussion with a friend about one of the Vegas strip hotels when he suddenly blurted out how “dumb” he thought the name of the hotel was. Although our discussion had nothing to do with the hotel name, his passionate stance, seemingly out of nowhere, made us pause. We soon realized we too had strong opinions on many of the hotel names and a list of the best and worst Las Vegas Strip hotel names was born.

The list is admittedly unscientific. No surveys were taken, no marketing studies conducted. By far the most difficult part in coming up with the list was trying to separate the “feeling” you have for the hotel based on things such as its decor and atmosphere in an effort to create a list based solely on a name. If we were provided with a list of 10 hotel names which we had never visited, a non-emotional list could be much more easily created.

We came to the conclusion that there is no way to separate any emotional attachment to a hotel from its name, so the list is a result of the name itself in combination with the “feeling” each one creates. Clearly a name + feel generated list is subjective and ends up being largely a personal list based on experiences at the premises and unconscious biased toward certain words, places or themes.

To be considered, the hotel has to be open to the public and we had to have spent time within the hotel – not necessarily a stay at the hotel, but have spent time within its public areas.

Some hotel names themselves simply don’t conjure up any emotion for us and don’t make the list. Hotels falling into this category are Wynn, Planet Hollywood, MGM Grand, Horseshoe, Flamingo, Harrah’s and Tropicana.

Some hotels are named based on a theme, location or hotel design and because of that their name suits them perfectly. Paris, Excalibur, Treasure Island (although much less than it once did), Luxor, Circus Circus, Caesars Palace, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, New York-New York, Venetian, Palazzo fall into this category.

List of best Las Vegas Strip hotel names:

1. ARIA – Simply a beautiful hotel with a name that suits it. Simple and elegant.

2. The Mirage – The Mirage best sums up the Vegas Strip for me in that I often feel what I am seeing is an optical illusion. In my opinion it is a brilliant name with the top of the towers themselves creating a mirage. It’s a shame it’s being transformed into the Hard Rock.

3. Encore – What I like best about the name Encore is that it itself is an Encore to the Wynn resort. A second performance demanded by a brilliant first performance.

4. Cosmopolitan – The word cosmopolitan makes me think of a sophisticated, glamorous traveller. This hotel pulls off that feeling well.

List of worst Las Vegas Strip hotel names:

1. The Linq – There is only one. That is how bad this name is. A number two in the list wouldn’t even come close.

What impact, if any, does the hotel name have on your opinion or feelings about the property itself? What impact does the name have on your view of the fabulous hotels on the Vegas Strip?
